Disclaimer: To be honest I have pondered doing this for a while simply because it feels a tad funny enabling people in things that generally are not good for them. NO NO NO, I am the last one to cast judgment, and I would never do that, and I am right there with you but, rarely do the things we typically discuss end well, without someone getting hurt, and that's what i feel a little funny enabling.
Also, I cannot be held responsible for anything you read on this blog, and surmise or decide to use. Please only do so at your own risk
Anyway that said, here we go:
Topic 1: Keeping your computer clean.
I have recently discovered Google Chrome, and have also discovered that his browser has a function that will let you surf the internet "incognito". You simply go to the little tool in the top right hand corner and click. Then select "New incognito window", and a new window sill pop up (See figure 1). You can also invoke the incognito window by clicking CNTL-SHIFT-N all at the same time.

What this function will allow you to do is surf the internet without leaving any traces on the computer. It is akin to visiting your banking website, and it may ask you if you are on a public computer, and if so, it will delete all passwords, cookies, and URLs that you might have used while using the browser. NOTE: any files and you may download, such as pictures will still be preserved.
Another thing I like about this function is that, when you close the window, it doesn't pause and ask you if you want to close all the tabs, it simply closes with little to no fan fair.
You can use this function for anything you normally do on the internet with some degree of assurance you are not leaving any tracks on your computer.
There are some things to do as well in other browsers such as IE, Firefox, and the lot, and we may discuss those. Google Chrome is simply easy to use, with very little setup required.
If you are interested in this and other topics please let me know and I will continue. If not I just may drop it.

Please continue! I think I do everything to ensure my security but, if you know something new I'm all ears.
Great idea, you enabler!
Chrome is my favorite browser. Things that crash Explorer seem to work better in Chrome.
I hope they'll eventually allow editing of those "recently added bookmarks" on the splash page. I always use Incognito mode, but bookmarks still show. Not that I bookmark anything incriminating, but one day I worry about getting careless.
Personally, I think it's crazy to try and conduct an affair or write a blog on a computer that you share with your spouse. It's just asking to be caught. I wouldn't even do it if I didn't have my own laptop to which I have the only password.
Button: I suppose I am. Is that a bad thing?
L: You are a smart woman, one of the reasons I like you, and you are right. I didn't know that about bookmarks in Incognito mode. If I miss anything please feel free to point it out!
LOL - Don't worry about being my enabler, I'm doing it to myself anyways, and only I can be blamed at the end of this mess.
But thanks for the tips anyways! I can always use help with computer junk :)
Firefox does the same, and works on a mac (which Chrome doesn't). Just sayin'. We wouldn't want you to be accused of mac user discrimination, or something ;)
I don't know if there is a CTR SHIFT N type shortcut, but it's all there in the settings under privacy. I have it set as default. Actually, as an extra precaution I only use firefox for my mischief making. For kosher internettling I use Safari. Safari launches as default, and firefox is hidden deep within the system, unless the snooper was incredibly thorough, it would look as though my only browser was safari.
The best most useful function in the world I have found is apple-H, (hides the whole application, rather than apple-M that just minimises the top window) presumably you have a pc equivalant? And the best thing is it is lightening quick. It's a good idea to have something kosher-risque hiding underneath so if you are for any reason flustered that can explain it.
I am the only one to use my computer, my husband is a luddite. But I don't use that as an excuse to be blasé, if he was at all suspicious I am sure he would find the means needed to work out how to get in.
Good post. More please.
I must confess though. I have a gazillion pics that would be VERY hard to explain.
Not to mention an archive of email to compete with the British Library.
Hmmmm. I keep meaning to do something about that, but just CAN'T
B: Thank you very much... I wouldn't want be be accused of MAC discrimination by ANYONE. And of course you are free to share any of those pics.
I'm with L. on this one. Over the past few days I've been haunted by what's happened to a couple of bloggers we're both familiar with -- I'm refraining from referring to them directly in order to keep the Ghost of the Great and Mighty Google at bay, but I'm pretty sure at least L and Button, and you, Shackleford, know who I'm talking about.
Other issues worth thinking about:
Text messages (it was good enough to get the former mayor of Newark busted).
Your phone in general. What shows up on your statement? What would happen if someone looked at the logs on the phone itself?
How does your phone carrier handle internet privacy? your ISP? know how to use a proxy server?
How you pay for things.
And also, how any of your playmates manage their own security. Are they capable of discretion? Too arrogant to believe they'll get caught? What happens when their spouse knows your name? Or your spouse knows theirs?
I'm not sure my spouse WOULD divorce me -- but I might divorce him to avoid being "the bad one" for the next few decades.
Good tip. I'm with L - the "recent bookmarks" in Chrome are a nuisance. The only way I've found to alter them is to remove the bookmark, or to add 9 more innocuous bookmarks to replace the ones displayed.
HA! The bookmarks staring at me right now...

I should probably fix that :-)
On a separate note, I hope our AWOL friend makes it through everything in one piece.
Helen: you make some great points (no pun intended), maybe we should come up with a checklist. I hope to cover other things those choosing to participate in this blogging lifestyle might look out for. Maybe you would like to write some for us?
Andy: you, L and B may be on to something. we may need to find a better way to deal with bookmarks.
I'd have to agree with L.--I think doing any blogging/illicit stuff on a shared computer is just asking for trouble. If I had to share, I wouldn't dare.
As it were, my husband cannot, legally, access my computer (it has proprietary information for several companies, and NDAs have been signed all around).
Ms. Inconspicuous, WOW mystery with your work! Do you have a license to kill as well?
Only in the right heels. ;)
Now that is SEXY!
